Nesmith of Tipton, was one of the five men who were commended for “service beyond the normal' 11 of duty” when they endangered their liv.es while fighting fire during constantly recurring explosions in a bomb storage area at Wheeler Field, Hawaii.These men,4 members of the guard section, worked to control the fire and prevent tfsi spread with shirts, brooms and, whatever ©fee was available until the arrival of the regular fire fighters. The land mines which were stored in the bomb storage area, were Accidentally detonated causing a terrific explosion, setting .fire to the surrounding grass,, and burning many of the camouflaged nets covering stores ofland mines end. aerial bombs.
