j An Old Soldier.At the meeting of Gordon Post G. A. R., at Haney’s Corner, Dec, 5, 1891, John Surber, ©f Shelby township, was j mustered into said post, who is prob-j ably the olaest G. A. II. man in the j State. Mr. Surber was born July 19,11797, and was a soldier of the war of ; 1812, and fought under Gen, Jackson | at the battle of New Orleans, when j they got behind the cotton bales and j fotch era up a standing. He also helped to cut out the old military road from Nashville to New Orleans. In * the war of the rebellion, Mr. Surber ) enlisted in spring ef 1S62, in Co. A., 56 Keg-, Ind. Vols., 100 days service,and afterward enlisted in the Gth Reg., i Ind. Cav. Vols., and during the period of his last service in 1864 he was bad-j ly crippled in a R. R collision on the j L. N. The last notable event of his i life was his marriage in August, 1891,I to the widow Call, with whom he bids fair to spend the evening of life in blissful quietude. Mr, Surber is in politics a true discipld of his old commander Hickory Jackson, and he is in good health for one of his age and bids fair t© become a centennarian and something more.
