THE EXACT SITE |of the fort is a little difficult to determine, as no landmarks were left, and none are* '77living now who can recollect anything about it. It was, known, however, to be located on what is now High street, between Market and Adams, and several years ago some researches were made by Dr. Beatty, Prof. Eli Tappan, of Kenyon College, Dr. A. M. Reid and perhaps oneor two others, to identify the place. A well, known to have been used by the fort, had been discovered some time before, and on this eceasion the remains of a hearth were found in the rear of a small frame house on the Tappan lot on High street just above Adams. This heartbhad evidently been the foundation of a chimney in one of the block houses, probably the one at the northwest corner. With this as a starting point the west line of the fort extended southwardly across j the lot belonging to M. Basler and onto the premises now owned by Hon. J. H. Miller. The structure extended out to the front of the bank, and commanded a fine view up and down the river. Perhaps future excavations in that locality may reveal further objects and poims of interest in this historical spot. The plan will be hung up in the Auditor’s office for the edification of present and future generations.
