A. Metzgar. then pastor of St. John’s and Grace Luheran charge.They started housekeeping in Em-milsburg. where they carried on a baking industry successfully for more than two years and then moved to Gettysburg in 1880 where they continued the same business for nearly a quarter of a century. Since 1923. Mr. Tawney has been ill the employ of the borough continuously with the upkeep of streets and alleys his uiain assignment.Both in Good Health Mr. Tawney served in that department when H nude the transition from :i lorsc-diawn cart (o the first truck.Both Mr and Mis Tawncy are in good health Hiid recall clearly events of their childhood. Taw-ney, recalls that he and other members of his family went to Gettysburg from their home at Wolf hill to visit an uncle who was a , Union soldier While there they were warned of the neax approach of the Confederates. They walked to the farm of Newton Durboraw more than a mile east of Two Taverns from where they could hear the sound of the three-day conflict.After the battle they returned home to find their dwelling partly demolished and robbed of food andclothingPled From Home Burins BattleMrs Mary Tawney. who is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Barbehenn, was the eldest of three small children left behind with their mother when Mr Barbehenn joined the Army. The mother and the three small children fled from their home on Breckenridge street on the first day of the battle to find shelter at the Peter Thom residence located at the Evergreen cemetery. From there they went farther south along the Baltimore 'pike where they remained until after the battle.
