Jalott's. threeyounger brothers, Clifford, Carloa, and Joe Bob, were bom in La Vemia, San Antonio, and Luling. respectively. By 1930 the Conner family was living across the county line in Guadalupe County, and it appears that county remained the family residence in subsequent years. Jalett attended schools in Luling and Prairie Lea. and graduated from Prairie Lea High School. His first job after high school was as manager of Borden's I leapO'Cream store in Luling f fle left that job after four years and wont to work for Magnolia Oil Com-panv.In 1934. Jalett married Gypsie Mitcheltree in Gonzales He was eighteen. Gypsie. seventeen, was the youngest daughter of Andrew and Coosa Mae (Mamie) Mitcheltree. The Mitcheltrces. originally from Burnet County, had several older children when Gypsie and her parents moved to Luling in the 1920s, when* Andrew worked in the oil holds. By 1930 Gypsie was the only child remaining in the home. The Mitcheltrees lived at 1318 Fannin Street After their mamage. Jalett and Gypsie lived at 1219 Poplar Street in Luling Ihcy had two children.Connie and TobvBy 1942. his parents were separated and his mother was living in Oklahoma City- Jalett enlisted in the Navy on May 31. 1942, in New Orleans, La. He trained as aircraft radio and communication technician. After training in Houston and Corpus Christi he was promoted to petty officer 2nd class. He transferred to San Diego. Calif, when* his brother Clifford was stationed at a naval hospital. On May 14. 1943 the Luling Newsboy reported that Jalett had completed a year in the Naval Reserve. He became an instructor at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington in late 1943. The* air station was a training base for aviators flying F4F Wildcat and F6F Helical fighter aircraft.The* American war effort produced a plethora of new and diffcn-nt ships The surprise air attack, launched from Japanese aircraft carriers on Pearl I lar-bor clearly showed that the future of the American Navy's effectiveness required bringing air power to the enemy.
