Wednesday, December 10, 1941.Rush County War Notes: Of all local residents in the flaming Far East, gravest fears are felt today for Ralph Gwinnup of near Falmouth. He was an electrician’s mate, first class, on the U.S.S. Penguin, a minesweeper which admittedly was sunk by Jap action at Guam. How many men on the Penguin survived the attack is not known. Gwinnup, age 30, enlisted in the Navy about nine years ago and had been at Guam since August. His mother, Mrs. Minnie Gwinnup, and a brother, Fred, live in the Falmouth vicinity while a sister, Mrs. Ray Vredenburg, resides in Rushville. His wife and four-year-old daughter are now in Connersville. Furthermore, Mrs. Ralph Gwinnup’s brother, Russell Caldwell, was a Marine aboard the U.S.S. West Virginia, reported sunk by Jap bombs at Pearl Harbor. . . . Dr. and Mrs. J. E. Walther have received no word from their son, Jack, a civil employe for the military at Hickam Field, Hawaii. Jack lived only a block and a half from where the heavy bombs fell at the U. S. airport. Jack’s brother, Captain Joe Walther, was sent to this country from Hawaii on a military mission and he was here when the attack came. He now has returned to California, en route to the hot spot islands. . . . Nothing official yet from recruiting stations as to the Rush county men enlisting in the nation’s armed forces this week but relatives inform us that Fred Baldwin and Ward Bates, Jr., have joined the Marines but will likely not be called up until December 27. . . . Hugh Glore, whowas graduated from R. H. S. in 1940, is aboard the UJS.S. Tennessee at Pearl Harbor. . . . Word has been received here that the151st Infantry — or at least part of it — has been moved out of Camp Shelby. Pvt. James Spillman writes relatives here that his Headquarters company of the 38th Division’s 151st Infantry was moved Monday to the air base at Jackson, Miss. . . . Mr. and Mrs. Paul Wesling have learned that their son, John, a recent Rush county draftee, was sent from Fort Ben to Camp Lee, Va.. . . A collection of photographs taken in Hawaii, contributed by Mr. and Mrs. Everett Gordon of south of town, was put on exhibit Wednesday at the Pitman-Wilson drug store. These pictures show various interesting parts of Hawaii and different sections of the U. S. fleet. One large colored view is of Pearl Harbor. Gordon brought these photos back with him from Hawaiiwhere he served as a soldier several years ago.About the only thing we want for Christmas this year is somegood news —of which we ain’t had none hardly for the past few days.
