B Carothers, pioneer builder and land owner, died at his home here Sunday morning1 after a short illness.TilMr. Carothers was born July 30, 1953, in Hickman county, Tennesse, and came to Texas in 1870, settling in Coryell county. He came to Haskell county in 1887 when it was a frontier country and has lived in this part of the county since.Elder in ChurchMr. Carothers was a ruling elder In the Presbyterian church at the time of his death and had been for 50 years. He was a trustee of the Reynolds orphanage, a Presbyterian institution, at the time it was located at Albany. Mr. Carothers built the first school in this part of Haskell-county and had an active part In the building of all the churches of Rochester. He was a charter member of the Rochester Masonic lodge, and was active in that fraternity up to the time of his death.He was known as the father of Rochester. having founded the town In 1903, the year that Orient railroad came through. Mr. Caro-thers gave the right-of-way for the railroad and was instrumental in Dringing It through this part of West Texas. He laid out the town on his land, and pave lots for the building of Rochester's first business institutions. He saw the town grow from a ranch country in the early days to a thriving city ol 1.500 peop’e. He had extensive land and cattle holdings throughout Texas, as well as real estate property in Port Worth.Mr. Carothers was married in 1881 and had eleven children and 23wasbar$37.5 wooc W.
