Kirk, of this city, whose true name was thought to be James Sul-livan on account of bis baying drawn his pension under that name, has given the Tribune. an explanation for the reason that bis father had used both names although Kirk was his right name.He said that when the civil war began his father’s parents were living at Oolambus, Ohio, and he was anxious to enlist aud fight for his adopted country but owing to his age, sixteen years, his parents opposed him. He ran away from home and m order that his parents would not find traoe of him he enlisted nnder the name of Sullivan whiob was his mother’s maiden name.! After receiving his honorable discharge from the navy he enlisted in Company A. Eighty-eighth Ohio In fan try nnder the same name. Some years after the war closed when he applied for a pension he fonnd it was neoessary for him to make application under the name in wbioh he had enlisted and byr which he was known by his army oomrades and officers by whom he fnrnished proof of his servioe. For this reason his pension vonohera were always made out to James Sullivan alias James Kirk and it was neoessary to secure the permit for burial at the soldiers’ oemetery on Ekin avenue in the same way, both names being nsed in the death certificate issued by the boardof health.
