SALH command to changeThe command of the SALH is to change at the unit’s regular parade, on Thursday evening.Commanding Officer, Lt.-Col. Reed Ainscough, on completion of the regular four-year term,will hand over his command to Lt.-Col. Douglas Heine. The public is invited to attend this ceremony which begins at 8 o’clock at the Patterson Armouries. All ranks will be on parade.Col. Gordon Armstrong, commander Alberta district, will be the reviewing officer, and Brig.-Gen. W. A. Howard, militia adviser, will accompany him from Calgary.Lt.-Col. Ainscough began his military career as an army cadet at Fort Macleod. He joined the 93 Fd. Bty., RCA, in Fort Macleod at the beginning of the Second World War.He was selected for officer training and qualified at Gordon Head, B.C., and Brandon, Manitoba. He proceeded overseas and joined the 5th. Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery in England. He served with this regiment in Normandy and was later promoted to Captain with the 91st. Battery of the 6th. Field Regiment.While serving as a forward observation officer with the South Saskatchewan Regiment, he was wounded in the fighting near Rouen.Following his return to civilian life, Lt.-Col. Ainscough commanded the 93rd. Battery at Fort Macleod and Pincher Creek. He organized four army cadet corps, two on the Blood Reserve, one at Pincher Creek and one at Fort Macleod, which were affiliated with the 93rd. Field Battery.He was transferred with the Canada Life Assurance Co. toMedicine Hat in July, 1959, and I joined the South Alberta Light Horse as a squadron commander in May, 1961. In August, 1964, he was appointed second in command of the regiment, and in December of that year he assumed command.During the past four years, the militia has been reorganized and given new roles. The SALH was fortunate in receiving a role with the Mobile Command Reserve to provide a light armoured squadron which is part of the Armoured Training Headquarters in Calgary.During 1967 the regiment was j Hat and to the South Alberta honored to receive its Guidon j Light Horse. He was appointed from HRH the Princess Alex- adjutant in the fall of 1963 and andra, in Calgary. The regiment was promoted Major and ap-was also given the Freedom of pointed Officer Commandingthe City of Medicine Hat.Major Heine* joined the South Alberta Regiment in 1953. He was commissioned in 1954 and took his officer training at Camp Borden. He served as a Troop Officer until transferring to the 19th. Alberta Dragoons in Edmonton in 1958 while attending the University of Alberta.Upon completion of his degree he again returned to Medicine“B” Sqn. on December 1, 1964., . / • H • *He was appointed Second in Command of the Regiment on January 1, 1968.
