70 Emporia Colored Boys, Two GirlsNow Serving in U.S. Armed ForcesSeventy-two colored boys and two girls from Emporia have left home and now are serving their country In all branches of the service in all parrs of the world.Of the group, 43 are stationed overseas in India, Australia. Alaska, and England; and are fighting in the South Pacific, France, Italy, Holland and Germany.Many of Emporia's colored families have given two, three or four sons, and m several families brothers are serving overseas. S. Sgt. William M. Collier, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oordie Collier, ilOI Sylvan, is the only one reported wounded in action. Sergeant Collier was wounded In Italy on October 12. He still is in a hospital there. His brother, Sgt. John A. Collier, also is in Italy.Three of the four sons of Mr. and Mrs. Roliert Mack. 1122 Cottonwood, are overseas. Sgt. WilHard Mack is in the Mariana Islands, S-Sgt. George Mack is in New Guinea, and S-Sgt. Richard L. Mack is in Holland. Their brother, cpl. Ray E. Mack, hasn't left the States.Another family with 75 per cent of the boys serving overseas is that of Mrs. Lesly Harrison, 1227 Sylvan, Sgt. Leslie Harrison is in Holland, LeRoy Harrison, s 1-c. is in Australia, and Pvt. Otis B. Harrison is in India. A fourth son, Pfc. David Homer Harrison, Is in this country.Mr, and Mrs. Marcus Morrow, Fifteentii and Woodland, are the parents of three fighting corporals, Cpl. M. O. Morrow', who Is in Burma; Cpl. Neal Morrow, Belgium; Cpl. John D. Morrow, now in France. Lewis Dorsey, s l-c, who is stationed in Hawaii, and William Dorsey, Std. 3-c, on an LST boat in the Southwest Pacific, are the two sons of Mr. and Mrs. William Dorsey, SI7 Cottonwood.Thomas N. Hutcherson, S 2-e, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hutcherson, still is training In the United States, bxit his soldier and sailor brothers are overseas. Allen Hutcherson, S 1-c, is in the Admiralty Islands, and Pvt. Charles Hutcherson is in France.Mrs. Reva Drake. 504 East Twelfth, has three brothers In uniform, James Benard Essex, S 2-c, Pvt. Paul A. Essex, and Sgt. Mark H. Essex.Two sailor brothers who have gone overseas are Leonard L. Mitchell, who is in Italy, and Marvin O. Mitchell, in England, sons of Mr. and and Mrs. Wardie Mitchell, 114 South Market.Lfc Edward H. Henderson (the only commissioned officer in the group) is the son of Mrs. Cora Henderson. He has been in Australia and that vicinity for three years.Pvt. Laurena A. Carson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Carson, 81l Syliavan, and Pvt. Anne B. Brewer, daughter of William Brewer, H26 Garfield, are the two women soldiers serving in WAC. Pvt. Brewer's brothers, Cpl. William Brewer, and Pvt. Frank Brewer, are also in the army.Other brothers serving In the Army or Navy are James R, Kayhill, Std. M. 1-c. and Sgt. Dolan Kayhill, sons of Mr, and Mrs. James Kayhill; Pfc. Theodore Gandy and Sgt. Lawrence Gandy, sons of Mrs. Annie Gandy. 520 South Market; S-Sgt. Paul Terry and A-C Kenneth Terry, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Terrv, 202 East; Frank Albert Tyler, Jr., Std. M. l-c, and Sgt. Marshall Tyler, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Tyler, 212 Congress, and Pfc. Grant Burton and Pvt. David Burton, sons or Ulysses G. Burton. Cpl. L. C. Daniels is wearing khaki, and his brother, Glen Roy Daniels, husband of Mrs. Roy Daniels, 902 Sylvan, is a coxswain 3-c in the Navy.Others in the various branches of the service, many of who are overseas, are Pvt. James Carmen, James Winn and Sam Browne.The colored women of Emporia oragnized an Army Mothers’ club a year ago last' April. They meet every' fourth Thursday of the month and work on projects. Several times they have made and sent articles to Winter Genera] hospital in Topeka. They plan to send a box with Christmas gifts to Winter this month. This 3’enr Easter cards were sent to all the colored boys and girls in service. and club members plan to send Christmas greetingse. Cookie and candy donations to the Army Mothers' canteen at the Santa Fe depot often are made.Officers of the club are Mrs. R. J. Mack, president; Mrs. C. W. Dellvice-president; Mrs. Roy Daniels,secretary, and Mrs. Sam Cox, treasurer.
