Mortar and artillery fire during the day had risen to a deadly cresendo. The only link with other American units was a sound power telephone line which had to be patched time after time under sizzling machine gun and rifle fire. As the sun was sinking orders to withdraw came over the phone. Sgt. Buffone covered with his Browning automatic rifle while his men pulled out. Firing from the hip he follower! them. They took up a new position as ordered and fought through the night until reinforcements came.Sgt. Buffone's unit previously leaped to spearhead operations in Sicily, Italy and Normandy. He wears the unit Presidential Citation.
