Markowitz dedared that the * 24-yea r-old officer, highest ranking Carteret aorvtceman to give his life for his country, had “led the attack on the citadel of St. Malo under intense fire from three sides.“He cleared a path through mine fields and succeeded in reaching the fort. There he climbed to the top of a high wall and set demolition charges while under enemy observation and fire. When these charges failed to open the fort, Capt. Markowitz wa* ordered to withdraw, hut he remained behind to make certain that all the wounded were evacuated.“Two days later he again led his company in an attack. Exposing himself to enemy fire, he ‘drew attention away from flanking forces. Again he declined to withdraw until all the wounded had been rescued.”The storming of the fort tookplace August 11 and 13, 1944, The assault also netted 760 Ger-man prisoners, for which he received the Bronze Star Medal.
