Move On To Put State War Memorial At GettysburgKINGSPORT TIMES-NEWS Sunday, Dee. 5, 197*A century and seven years ago, Tennessee troops opened and dosed one of history's decisive battles. More than half a billion Americans have since toured the battleground, seeing no reminder of this heroism. Now, a group is raising $200,000 to erect a memorial to Tennessee in our nation’s most visited National Military Pork.In early July of IMS, Hie First, Seventh and Fourteenth Tennessee Infantry Regiments took part in the Battle of Gettysburg. Governor Buford Ellington is Honorary Chairman, The effort has the endorsement of the Tennessee Congressional Delegation; of the judges of the thirteen counties from which came thebulk of Tennessee troops at Gettysburg; of the American legion, Department o t Tennessee; of Veterans ol Foreign Wars, Depart ment of Tennessee; of chambers of commerce; and of other civic and military organizations.^Tennessee’s priceless contribution to our national heritage, as the Volunteer State, should not go unnoticed by the more than four million people who visit Gettysburg National Military Park each year,” says General Donald A. Ramsay, of Nashville, Commander-in-Chief of the Confederate High Command. “Tennessee became known as the Volunteer Slate in the War of 1812, when so manyof her men volunteered for service. Her nickname was upheld in the Mexican War. Her quota was 2,800 but 30,000 responded to the colors. The Volunteer Spirit should be heralded as an inspiration to present and future generations.”The sculptor Dr. Felix de Weldon, lias been commissioned to create the Tennessee memorial. His works grace public parks and plazas around fbe world, but his masterpiece Is the U.S. Marine Coqs War Memorial, in Arlington, Virginia. The largest sculpture ever cast in bronze, it depicts the raising of the Stars and Stripes on Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima.Dr. de Weldon’s monument to Tennesseans promises to be one of the most impressive ever erected in honor of the American fighting man.
