Simmons recently call-* . ced on the Bureau of Navigation forstatistics, names, etc., of North Car-olina’s men in the Naval Service. rThis information was compiled andfurnished him and made public lastweek in The Congressional Record.The number of men in the Naval service of the United States during the World war from North Carolina and other statistics regarding their service, by counties, is a mere matter of speculation, for, unlike the War Department, this has never been made public.According to the records of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, of the Navy Depai’tment, J. L. Beam enlisted first as apprentice seaman at Atlanta, Ga.; November 18, 1912, and was honorably discharged at Norfolk, Va., on November 17, 1916. He re-enlisted on January 5, 1917, at Richmond, Va., with a rating of Fireman, first class. Death occured az the Naval Hospital in Charleston,S. C., on March 21, 1918, diagnosis ulcer of the stomach. His remains i were shipped to his father, Foster Beam, of Ellenboro, and were interrat Bethel Church, Ellenboro.
