Air GuardsmenRescuedAfter Plunge Into FundyBANGOR (#)—Two Maine Air National Guardsmen bailed out of their flaming jet fighter last night and were rescued some hours Jatcr as they bobbed about m life rafts on the Bay of Fundy.National Guard spokesmen at Dow Air Force Base here said the men are at a Canadian Air Force base at Greenwood, N. S., but will be returned to Bangor later today.The Guardsmen were identifiedas 1st Li. George Shaskan, 24, of Dover-Fox croft, the pilot, and 2nd LI. Thomas Gibbs, 23, of Bangor, the radar operator. Neither was hurt.The men bailed out of theirF-39 Scorpion at 9,000 feet when flames broke out in one of the jet engines. They landed in the Bay of Fundy about 20 miles east of Grand Manan Island.The men inflated their portable life rafts and fired off flares to attract attention of would-be rescuers.Shaskan was picked up by a Canadian Air Force helicopter about three hours later. Gibbs was in the water about two hours longer before he was picked up |by a fishing vessel.The Guardsmen were on a night-training flight with five other Scorpions whe* the trouble developed.
