Lejeune Boulevard accident takes life of motorcycle driverBY MIKE SHERRILLDAJIY NEWS STAFFA Camp Lejeune Marine driving a motorcycle on N.C. 24 died Thursday night when the bike struck an oncoming car that authorities said turned across the median into McDonalds.The name of the 22-year-old Marine was withheld pending the notification of his family.Loren Douglass Jones, 22, also of Camp Lejeune. was driving with his girlfriend east-bound on N.C. 24 in a black Ford Mustang around 8:30 p.m.The Marine on the motorcycle was driving west, when Jones turned left across the median before the light at Western Boulevard to get to McDonalds located beside the Liberty Inn. Jacksonville Deputy Police Chief Sammy Phillips said.The bike exploded. It burst into flames,” Phillips said.Emergency personnel tried to resuscitate the Marine at the scene. He was taken to Onslow Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead before 9 p.m.Officers closed N.C. 24 east-bound lanes for about 20 minutes and were still directing traffic more than an hour after the wreck.Bridgett Batts, a witness parked at McDonalds on her own motorcycle, said she saw the car turn and the Marine on the motorcycle slam on his brakes.The car was stopped too, she said.Jones, visibly shaken after the crash, has yet to be charged. Phillips said. The accident is still under investigation.
