PFC. HUBERT LING SURPRISES FAMILY :Pfc. Hubert Ling, a son ol Mr. and Mrs. Earl Ling, Somerset R. L-4, returned to his home, Friday morning, after more than two vears of service with five outfits in the Mediterranean theatre of operations. When his parents arose. Friday morning, they were very much startled to see a young soldier sleeping on the davenport in the living room. Awakened by the noise, young I ing turned over, and opened his eyes, just as his parents, recognized theirlong departed soldier sonPfc. Ling, following training in the states, sent overseas in September,1943, to Oran Africa, where he wasattached to the 3006th ordnance company. There until December, that year. Ling was then sent to Naples, Italy, with the 52nd amphibious tractor outfit, with which he remained until May, 1944, when he was again transferred.This time it was with the Fifth armv truck outfit, where he remained until July, 1944,. when transferred to the 719th railroad outfit.Not until July, 1945, was he againtransferred to the 719th railroad outfit, training for operations in the Pacific.Leaving Italy, August 7, bound for Manila, via the Panama canal, L ng said his ship was about, five days out of Panama, when word came ofthe Japanese surrender.We were all so excited, we threw our hats overboard, and 1 guess thefish around there arc having a swell time, playing G. I. now,” he said. With that the Philippine order was cancelled and the ship came to the states, with the men landing nt Camp Shanks, N. Y , and then transferred to lnd.antown Gap.Ling has been granted a 39 day furlough at home, after which he will report to Camp Plaudhe, La., a railroad out-fit camp. The young soldier, a graduate of the 1941 class of Somerset high school, wears three battle stars for Foggia, Rome-Arno and the Appennes mountain campaigns.
