Navy Radar Man Is HomeAfter two years at naval bases along New Guinea's coastline in the south Pacific, Ted Furchner, radar mate 2/C, is spending a 30-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. N. C. Furchner, 1580 Plumas st.A graduate of Heno high school, he was attending the University of Nevada before he left for naval training in the fall of 1942. He will report for reassignment when his leave ends in September.His brother, Don Furchner, was home from naval duties last month after the destroyer Zellars on which he served was severely damaged by the direct hit of a Jap suicide plane off Okinawa, A fireman 1/C at the time of his leave he has since changed ratings.The Zellars has been undergoing extensive repairs at San Pedro, Calif., including the patching of a 31-foot hole left by the Kam- j akaze attack. The Furchner broth- ■ ers met briefly at San Pedro when • Ted was returning from New Guinea and Don, his furlough just over, was awaiting his ship's repair.Don Furchner joined the navy about 18 months ago while a student at Reno high school. He first ! sailed with the Zellars in January.
