Co. 312, A. E. P.OELEBRHUS FOURTHr:vCI:tX1ECE OF J. K. BOWERS TEELS OF WONDERFUL TRIBUTE RAID TO UNITED STATES.rcCc(Prom Saturday** DaUr.tMr. and Mrs. J. K. Bowers, of west South street, have received a splendid deseriptional letter from4their niece, Miss Gertrude Perry, of Indianapolis, who is attached to a base hospital in France -as a 'Red Cross nurse. Miss Perry's home in Indianapolis is at 120 north Fourteenth street. She is the daughter of Ed Perry. Particularly interesting is her description of the Fourth of July celebration In France. Following is the letter in full:Dear Uncle and Aunt: Your letters received a few days ago and the contents were very cheering. You spoke of canning cherries; it listens good, but 1 can’t anticipate any eats like hot biscuits and jelly until after Christmas anyway. You spoke of wishing to be able to come to see me, and that would be mighty comforting, if I should need you, but it is highly improb* able. I shall be permitted, God willing, to come to you some day. I just finished a letter dad, telling him how wonderful that home-coming will be.1 am on night duty again and will try to complete my two months this time. You will be interested to know. what a gay time we all had celebrat-I mg the Fourth. England and France put forth every effort to make the Americans feel at home on their Independence Day. I went to a ball game in the afternoon and enjoyed ! sports and music after the game. The retreat was the most impressive of the celebration ceremonies.tI\tI(The privates were lined up and I stood at attention. The officers of i every nation of the allies stood in* * salute while the flag was being low-{ered. The band played “The Star(Spangled Banner” and among the vast assembly of people hearts werestirred by the thrilling cheers given for Old Glory as she slowly madeher descent. The bugle was blown*as each officer left the held.In the evening the American sisters and all officers and the privates were entertained at a targe theater. We had a little amusement on the side, a few speeches in honor of the day, moving pictures of the landing of the Rainbow Division in France and then some “community singing.”One office^ greatly amused me; he was so enthused he couldn’t keep still, so he kept his hands going in time with the music, and such a band was never heard. If the U. S. fights like it plays, then the German game is certainly up.Am yrell and in splendid spirits and will welcome all your letters.GERTRUDE FERRY,\ No. 3 Stationary Hospital, A. P.
