He is now in jail and awaiting trial.ELI ICE’S CASE.A Relative Refute* the Mis-statement* of a Correspondent.H. M. Ice, a relative of Eli Ice, who IB confined in the Moundsville Penitentiary for shooting a rebelprisoner to prevent him from escaping, writes to the Wheeling Intelligencer, giving a true account of the affair, and correcting some misrepresentations made by one C. P. A. in the Register. He says:“Eli Ice was residing at Farmington at the breaking out of tha rebellion, and for being a Union man, and voting for Abraham Lincoln, a parly of Secession roughs concluded to make him recant his political faith. They attempted to string him up by a rope, but finding him determined to stick to his avowed principles, they gave up their design on his life. After this occurrence he ieft the place, and joined Oapt. Latham's company. He remained with Lath am for two years, after which he joined Ewing’s battery, and remained in that command until the close of He was in nearly all of thewarprincipal battles, and was three times wouDded, the last lime at Hatcher’s Run, where he was left on the field for dead, but was afterwards recovered.“ *C. A. P.’ says he was treacherous. In this statement there is not one particle of truth; for there never was a more frank, outspoken or honorable man than Eli Ice. In regard to the tragedy that led to Ice’s trial and imprisonment, I beg leave to correct the untruthful historian. Ice was at home on a twenty days furlough, and was at Squire Carothers’ house on the evening of the allegedmurder, having his gun with him as he feared the rebel sympathizers in the vicinity would carry out their former threats and hang him. Uriah Wade had just returned from Camp Chase, under oath to be of good behavior. Squire Carothers thoughthe was not keeping his oath, and ordered Ice to arrest him and bring him to ManningtoD, telling Eli it was as much his duty to oliey him as his officers, Ice found Wade at the house of a man named Hess, and told him he bad orders to take him to Maunington. It wae not in the night time, nor was Wade a man of family as was alleged by “C. A. P.,” but was young, bold and fearless, and a decided Southern sympathizer. Ice took bim to ’Squire Carothers, who ordered him taken to Mannington that night. They started on their journey and had not proceeded more than a quarter of a mile when Wade was shot. Ice says that Wade seized his gun and tried to wrench It from him him, wben be shot him in self defense. The matter would have passed in oblivion had it not been for a newly fledged lawyer, Ezekiel C. Snodgrass, who desiring to distinguish himself, and being an ardent Southerner hunted up the old warrant and had Ice arrested and prosecuted with the result already well known.“Ice was without money to procure counsel, and the Court assigned for his defense a Mr. Somers, and ex-Confederate Captain.
