| / \ / Mf X7 I •to ' Want Votes of Old Soldiers. The sniveling, whining, lying appeals of republicans for the votes of “old soldiers” are again being sped abroad in the land, and here in Jacksonville, as on a former occasion, a partisan appeal is made to them to act as cats paws in pulling republican chestnuts out of the lire. The republican marplots have absolutely no respect for the “old soldier” except when they cau make use of him in a political way, and do not hesitate to insult him by asking him to drag the honorable name of “old soldier” in the mire of a political campaign for the benefit of the republican party. Such men would “steal the livery of heaven to serve the devil in,” and then brazenly look honest men in the face. The following notice is taken from the Journal of Aug. 12, while the comments following were furnished by a hardworking, honest old soldier of the second ward. The “Three Silly («en-erals” is an editorial from the St. Louis Republic of the 12th instant:ATTENTION, OLD SOLDIEKt!As the comrades in other towns and cities are collecting together to be in line in defense of honor, home and country, it is the wish of the old soldiers of this city to have an opportunity to enroll themselves under the banner of their fellow comrade, William McKinley, Jr. A meeting of all old soldiers will be held in the Lincoln club rooms at 7:.‘10 p. rn. Friday evening, Aiik'. 11, 18:*. By order of thecommittee.Do they favor the old soldiers? The republican party every four years has in the papers as they call “the waving of the bloody shirt, talking about favoring the old soldiers, and all thej other parties they call rebels. Here is a case in our town, second ward, of an old soldier who shed his blood for his country, and fought over four years, and he is now almost lt;50 years old, and nas been at hard work, and with all tie could spare over his living he educated his children. He has a son now a preacher in the Hawaiian Islands for six years. Another one started at Whipple academy with the desire alsoto have him a minister of the gospeJ, but the times are hard, and being short of means, so he asked forbeipfrom the republican board of our city. The board met on Monday, Aug. .1, and had live applicants for the place -Old Soldier Sanders Baptist and live others. Mr. Baptist is well acquainted with steam heating, but these republican friends of “old soldiers” gave the job to a man who has a good trade, is pretty well off, and only a family of himself and wife.THU KB SILKY UENEKALS.
