John J.Markowitz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Markowitz of 557 upper Rooafcvelh Avenue, led thestorming force which made a recent and thoroughly valiant attempt to take the dtadel at tit. M#lo, France, This fortress is in the hartwr of St. Malo and is set Into the ground fifty feet with underground tunnels extending from it in all directions from the water's edge. Attackers therefore were subject to ■murderous crossfire. The as-mulling group, according to the press despatch which to]UI of the borough officer's participation, succeeded in scaling the fortress wall, only to find this was but an -outer wall and one of the two great barriers divided by a moat. Unable to take the fortress at this initial attempt the force «was ordered, to withdraw and had to fight its way back across the outer wall just as it had when coming in.Li Markowitz Is a graduate of Carteret High School and the University of Alabama.
