Medals, awards for 15 (oast GuardsmenIV SEATTLE -- Fifteen Coast Guardsmen have been given medals and awards in recognition of their performance of duty on January 12, 1961, in the attempted rescue of the fishing vessel Mermaid, on the bar at the entrance of the Columia River.Five of these awards will be made posthumously.In attempting to rescue the Mermaid on the night of Junuary 12, 1961, five Coast Guardsmen lost their lives. Two Coast Guard patrol boats were also lost on this attempted rescue.THE FIRST of the award presentations was made on August 9, at the 'Port Angeles Coast Guard Air Station by Rear Admiral P. V. Colmar, Commander of t h e 13th Coast Guard • District. He presented Coast Guard Commendation Medals to Willis P. Miller, Darrell J. Murray, and John C. Webb, all 'boatswain’s mates, firstclass.At the same time, Admiral Colmar presented the Treasury Department's Gold Lifesaving Medal to Mrs. Laverne Culp of Port Angeles, widow of John L. Culp, Boatswain’s mate, first class, who lost his life in attempting to aid the Mermaid., This is the highest that can be given by the United States government.BOATSWAIN’S MATE, first class, John C. D, Webber, in charge of the program, told how to. control the height of fruit trees by pruning and grafting, making harvesting easier. She also explained a new method of drying favorite flowers by using a chemical compound called “.silica gel.” Thischemical absorbs moisture quickly without changing the color or form of the flower.Mrs. Webber concluded the program by reading the poem “Prelude” by LaVerne P. Larson.The next meeting will be Sept. 12 at the home of Mrs. J. C. De-Camp. Mrs. J. Wayne Busch will have charge of the program.
