DeploymentTwo local men have departed for extended deployment in the Mediterranean and CaribbeanSeas.Navy Disbursing Clerk Third Glass Nelson G. Harris, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Harris of Winchester, departed for an extended deployment in the Mediterranean Sea.Harris is serving as a member of Fighter Squadron 31, homebased in Virginia Beach. While deployed, his squadron will be embarked aboard the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga, operating as a unit of the U.S. Sixth Fleet.The missions of the Sixth Fleet are to protect U.S. citizens, shipping and interests in the Mediterranean, to deter aggression against Western allies by maintaining mobile striking forces, and to promote peace and stability in the Mediterranean area.During the cruise, Harris' squadron is scheduled to par-licipate in training exercises with other Sixth Fleet units, in addition to visiting such Mediterranean ports as Barcelona, Spain, and Naples, Italy.Harris is a 1971 graduate of iandley High School and joined he Navy in 1973.
