Colonel Von Aulock Refuses To Surrenderlt;(MadmanBy JAMES McGLINCYOutside St. Malo, Aug. 10 (UP)— The “Madman of St. Malo,” Colonel Von Aulock, commander of the German garrison, still held out in an uhderground citadel of this “captured” town tonight, deaf to entreaties to surrender and defiant of American attempts to blast him out.The mericans had tried everything — artillery barrages, aerial bombardments and numerous appeals. But the half-crazed veteran of Stalingrad, apparently hopeful a German counter attack would rescue him, drove his handful of holdouts, including.cooks and dish-By MARINE CORPS COMBAT CORRESPONDENTGuam (delayed) (UP)—In the early fighting for Guam, Lieutenant (jg) Richard B. Leander, St. Paul, and Lieutenant John W. A. Woody, navy medical officers, worked without rest for 96 hours treating more than 400 casualties at a first aid station only 100 yards from the front.Only on the third day of fighting were ambulance-jeep drivers able to maneuver their vehicles to the battalion dressing station. For the first two days it was necessary to carry the wounded to the beach on stretchers—a terrible ordeal for the injured and stretcher bearers alikeOne last attempt was made late today to persuade him to surrender. A captured German chaplain who said he was Von Aulock’s friend agreed to return to the citadel and explain the hopelessness of his situation.lt;■All firing ceased while the chaplain went on the mission. At this writing it is unknown whether the chaplain succeeded.V/hen I left the command post tonight they were wondering whether von Aulock would give in or whether, his guns would open up with a new bombardment, based on information the chaplain could give him of the American lines.Captured with the chaplain was a pretty blonde German girl, said , to■ the dangerous journey over the; blood-stained ridge to the aid star tion. Trained physicians are too valuable to be risked on the ad-mvanced fronts. In fact, they are forbidden there. So great was the flow of casualties that Doctors Woody and Leander had to keep a constant flow of plasma, drugs, and bandages coming up from the rear. Serious cases were given priority on the two few ambulance-jeeps while less seriously wounded men .waited their turns. After the long - ride to the ' beach, the wounded were evacuated to ships. .Two Women To Address 5.be von Aulock’s mistress. She wasattending some 100 wounded Germans in a shelter when taken and was wearing a red cross band.Typical of the various measures taken to induce the citadel garrison to surrender was when American officers found a German telephone! line in the cellar of a house. They! tapped it and succeeded in talking to the nazis inside the citadel. The Americans tried to persuade them the fight Was useless andi whoever was on the other end of the line agreed but von Aulock refused to come to the telephone.I saw one group of about 300 prisoners trudging along the street, typical of the remnant force with von Aulock. They were all types and sizes—soldiers, sailors and marines ^oung and old. They presented a queer spectacle in their varied uniforms, marching along in step, the only vestige of discipline left.It . was believed the men with von Aulock would surrender if he would let them. .St. Malo, and that includes the adjoining town of St. Servain, was like other towns “captured by Americans” in their lightning drive into Brittany. But with Germans still fighting in the streets and strongpoints like the citadel, resisting, it was hard to conceive the place was captured.”This was a hot place today with shells landing with monotonous: regularity and small arms fire whistling in the streets. Various, quarters may call it “captured” «but they would have a hard time convincing the doughboys and- airmen waiting to- assault the citadel and blast out the colonel.washers, to continue the fanatical fight.Treat Casualties Near Frontf
