IN SANTIAGO DE CUBA*S ' *'-p”foung Nathan Hawkins Who was Giv- J en up for Dead Writes a LetterHome.Amos Hawkins had about given up his son as dead when be received letter from him last Friday from Santiago. It was the first word direct from him that he had received for several months, but he heard “ from others that he bad been killed in the battle of Santiago* You may be as*9U red that the letter was a welcome one. It took a load from the father’s heart aod made him a happier man* The following is the letter:Santiago Db Cuba,July 18, 1898. 1Dear Father:—I write you once more. I received your letter the 15th of July. It found me moderately well. I have had a hard time of it since I last wrote you. We are proud to have gained a victory in one of the worst places in this country—not one of the worst, but the worst in allCuba»~ It is pitiful to see the destitute Cu-bans. They were lying everywhere ,, along the trails, some slowly starving; to death. The Americans have been unable to get food to them in many places until the last week or sc. Santiago laid down her arms yesterday, the 17tb, and there was a joyous time all around the city. Shouts from oue regiment to another until the whole army was cheering in chorus. It was a magnificent and inspiring scene and one the boys will never forget. The country here is all grown up in underbrush and briars and the Span- -iards have barb wire at all cross fences. This was to trap the soldiers. But when we got to them we went through them like fire through a stubble field. We marched two drys through the rain and mud and it was awful hard climbing the mountains^ When we would reach the foot of them there was a creek to swim or a bridge to make at night. We would have to pile right down in the water to sleep, but as we were as wet as we could get it made little difference. You folks: don’t know what a bard rain is. Yon ought to come down and see these mountain rains in Cuba but not to help us to fight Spaniards. Excuse poor writing as I have to write this letter on my knee.Nathan Hawkins.
