Edward KllenbogenPhilip l'lnru'.Samuel ItoftfnItnlpti II* niiirnentlialRabbis Assigned to Regular Army as Chaplains for First Time in History1 or the first time in the history of the U.S. Army rabbis have been assigned to the Regular Army as chaplains, it was announced by the Committee on Army and Navy Religious Activities of the National Jewish Welfare Board which made public the names of the first five rabbis who have made the Armychaplaincy their lifetime career. L. to R.: Chaplain Max A. Braude, ('haplain Edward Ellenhogen, Chaplain Samuel Rosen,Chaplain Ralph H. Blumenthal and Chaplain Philip Pincu*. Previously, rabbis had served in the Officers Reserve Corps and were called to active duty only during periods of national emergency or of peacetime maneuvers. During World War U, Sll rabbis, recruited, certified and served by the Committee on Army and Navy Religious Activities of the National Jewish Welfare Board, served as chaplains in the Army and Navy. The above five aU served overseas during the war.
