Harold DepewGets DischargeFrom U. S. NavyHarold Depew, SoMljc, U. S. N., was honorably discharged from the U. S. Navy at Lido Beach, New York, on July 25, 1946. After graduating from Caroline High School in June 1940, he enlisted and received his training at Newport, Rhode Island, after which he was assigned to the U.S.S. Rhind, DD 404, on which his brother, Frank, was already serving. It was not long before he was actively engaged in the war with Germany.In June 1941 the U.S.S. Rhind operated with Task Force 1 on patrol to guard shipping lanes in the NorthAtlantic from German submarine?and raiders. He was present at the signing of the Atlantic Charter in Newfoundland waters. In November 1941 escorted convoys across the equator on route to Cape Good Hope, Africa. Participated in other convoy and escort groups, also in the invasion of North Africa at Casa Blanca, Sicily and Salerno, Italy. Credited with entering Palermo Harbor, Sicily, as one of the first ships to do so. Operated with the U. S. Task Force and British Home Fleet to seek contact with the enemy in the North Atlantic waters. The convoy to North Africa, of which the U.S.S. Rhind was one of the escorts, ran into a wolf-pack of enemy submarines, which inflicted heavy damages on the convoy. A battle star was received for this convoy. At the end of the war with German}, the U.S.S. Rhind was sent to Pacific waters, where she continued escort and convoy duty. On September 2, 1945, she steamed from Saipan to Pagau Island to accept the uncondi-tionel surrender of the Japanese garrison.He holds campaign bars for all theatres of war: The European, Middle-Eastern, with four battle stars, the American Defense Bar with an A”, Good Conduct Bar and VictoryBar.Harold is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Depew and is at present staying with them.siittltl
