■At Troy, Ind., August 3d, 1883, of wounds received in defense of his country. David W. S. Shook was born at Versailles, Ripley county, Ind., February 12th 1839. He enlisted as a member of company C., 26th Indiana Volunteers in the war for the suppression of the rebellion, and received an honorable discharge from the service by reason of a wound received in the battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas, December 7th, 1862. From the effects of this wound,which was by gunshot, entering the left hip and passing directly across the spine near which the ball lodged, lie never recovered. The present fatal attack, is the third from which he has suffered since his discharge. In the first he was treated by Dr. Wood, of Cincinnati, and so far recovered his health as to be able to attend to business. In 1865 he was elected sherift of Ripley county, Indiana, and filled the office acceptably for six years, as principal and deputy. He had a second attack from his old enemy at Osgood, Indiana, from which he partially recovered under treatment ofDr. Thompson.Mr. Shook removed to Perry county about the year 1874 as one of the business managers of the Standard Oil Company, in buying timber and making staves, in which business he was employed up to the time of liis decease.In his last sickness he was attended by Dr. Webb and Butler, of Troy, Bemis and Howard, of Cannelton and Schell* haus and Brueker, of Tell City. The remains were interred in the Troy cemetery at 10 o’clock a. m., Sunday, by De La Hunt Post G. A. R. of Cannelton Indiana, assisted by many soldiers of the 26th and other regiments, and a large concourse of citizens. In the loss of Davi$ Shook the county loses a brave defender and a good 3itizen and his family a loved father and protector.
