Robert S. Mitchell, Little Rock, Ark. ‘‘We didn’t fire at first because we thought it was captured equipment being driven by Americans.Most of the Germans surrendered when we finally realized what wras happening. Others tried to shoot it out and were slaughtered.”About 30 Germans were killed and 75 captured before the night was over and the flow of German traffic into Mayenne stopped.The capture of Mayenne climaxed a 27-mile drive, started Saturday pear Fougeres and brought the westward advance within 140 miles of Paris, closer to the French capital than any previous American movement. The Mayenne river has been crossed at Chateaugontier and the drive eastward continues.
