PRIDE TAKEN BY VOLUNTEERS IN THEIR ORGANIZATIONS.Sons of' Old Hendricks Who Laid Down Their Lives on SouthernBattle Fields.(By W. M. Hess.)Having paid so much attention to my own company, H^I must say something about the other company, B, of the 7th regiment. In some respects, the records are similar.William C. Banta was the first captain of Co. B. Andred5 M. Luke, first lieutenant, Virgil H. Lyon, second lieutenant. Other commissioned officers were John V, Hadley and James W. Adams. Including recruits, the total strength of the company was 109: Of its officers, Lieut. Luke afterwards its captain, was severely wounded. Lieut. Hadley, while serving on the staff of Brigadier General James C. Bice, at the battle of the Wilderness, was taken prisoner. Five members of the Company were killedv in battle —Henry Ashby, Charles Cross, Joseph Jones, Eleazor Mills and J, M. L. Doyle.Those who died of wounds were Benjamin Bartholomew, I. N. Nash, William Bray. Died of disease, L. H. Davis, M. C. West, Johm Burns, R. M. Gowins, W. T. Higgins, Isaac Hutchinson, T. J. Thompson, William West. Taken prisoners, Aaron Acton, L. N. West, J. W. Morgan, James B. Walker, William Davidson, N. W. Jobe, G. W. Moody, H. O. Odell, C. T. Swindler.in which Hendricks county was largerly represented as I have to the 7th and• - • . . • . • •must content myself with brief references.As I am not attempting td write what might be called an authentic history of the part played by Danville and Hendricks county in the war of the rebellion, it will not be expected that I should go into details of the organization, membership and casualties of the various regiments.The 51st was organized in Indianapolis, Oct. 11, 1861, with Abel D. Streight as colonel. Like the 7th, it had two companies from Hendricks county, A and G.Cp A had for its first captain, Jacob H. Fleece, first lieutenant, Milton T. Russell, second lieutenant, Harvey Slavens. Other men from the county commissioned as officers were Jeremiah A. Givens, William A. Adair, John Emmons, Albert M. Dyer. William W. Scearce was captain of Co. K and by reason of promotion held the rank of major and that of lieutenant colonel. His brother, .George W. Scearce, was lieutenant of Co. K and was for a long time its commanding officer.James W. Sheets, Samuel Linger-man arid George W. Gregg .were, at different times in command of Co. C with rank of captain. Aaron W. Dooley, Gabriel H. Adams and Charles F. Stevens were lieutenants in the company.Of the original organization, Co A had 110 men, to which were added 77 recruits. Cor C had 90 men with 60. recruits.The 51st participated in many hard fought battles and yet, considering the number of men in it from Hendricks county, our fatalities were few. Co. A had eight and Co. C seven killed.One of the battles in which the regiment suffered greatly was that at Day’s Gap. It was in that engagement that Capt. Sheets of Co. C was killed. In May, 1863, the regiment was captured by superior numbers under command of Gen. Forrest. On the nightMaloney, James F. Rogers, John Rodgers, John C. Russell, John T.
