Sum WasBombed by Japanese Is Denied by OfficialsWASHINGTON, Aug. 4 —■lt;U,R— The navy department Friday night officially denied a statement reportedly made to San Francisco reporters by Lieutenant E. E, Ransom that a Japanese plane had dropped a bomb near the U, S. submarine S-37 in Chinese waters several weeks ago.Naval spokesmen said there was “no truth” to the report. They recalled that Ransom was attached to the Asiatic submarine service in 1937 but was relieved at that time to take up shore patrol duties m the Philippines and remained there until his recent transfer to this country.
