The officers arc First Lieutenant A. D. Fer-'guson, *who was killed at the buttle of Shiloh, April 6, 1862; Sergeant Robert W, Hilton, who was taken prisoner at the- same battle and died in prison; Captain Jack. Stibbs and Second Lieutenant Hell Hale. Mr. Buttolph was a member of the Twelfth Iowa regiment.In April, 1861, when President Lincoln called for volunteers, John H.Stibbs, Jason D. Ferguson and Hlel Hale were among the first to enlist In Company K, First Iowa infantry, for three months' service. At the expiration, of their enlistment they were honorably discharged. J. D. Ferguson went to his home in Nevada, Iowa. At the time of bis enlistment he was attending college at 'Mt. Vernon, Jovva, and teaching school duripg vacations.Ay«fcIn .September, 1861, John H. SUbbs commenced recruiting a company for three years. J.. p.. Ferguson came, as he fiuld, to go with Jack ‘Stibbs. ‘Hiel I-^ale also enlisted; 'At the time of electing, officers for Company. D, Twelfth Iowa infantry, John H. Stibbs was elected cap_tain; , J. D. Ferguson, first 'lletitehant, and Hiel I^ale, second lieutenant. R. W. Hilton, who had enlisted a sQuad of men from around Shellsburg, was elected orderly sergeant. '? •*Comparty D was sworn Into United States service October 26, at Dubuque, Iowa. • It was at Fort Henry, Fort Donaldson, and Shiloh battles and was in the Hornet’s Nest at Shiloh.Some time prior to the battle of Shiloh Lieutenant Ferguson, told some of his comrades that soon there was to be a battle and that he would be killed. The morning of April 6, 1SG3, Captain Stibbs offered to excuse J. D. Ferguson from going to the front, but. he replied, saying, I will do my duty. I am not afraid to die. After he company had .fallen in Uqe he came and shook hands -with' each man In the line, saying, “We do not know who will fall. I want to bid each of you goodbye.”- He. was, killed. The company wao taken prisoners with the .rest of the regiment. R. TV. Hilton died while prisoner of war.; Capt. J. H. Stibbs, now known n9 Brigadier General Jack Stibbs, resides In Chicago, 111. Hiel Hale died at Tucson, Arizona, March 22. 1903. .
