C, LordThe Ferris FamilyAmong the early settlers of this township was Captain Oliver Ferris who was born in Greenwich, Conn., on November the 22ud, 1752, the son of Josiab and a descendent of Jeffrey Ferris, Captain Oliver married the daugh-ter of Enos Lockwood (Abigail Lockwood) on the lOtli day of Feb, 1776, They were married liy the Rev, Blackleaeh Burrit, who, on the 17th of June of that year was taken prisoner and placed in the Old Sugar House Prison in New York City,The ancestors of Mr, Oliver Ferris and Benson Ferris were an old New England Family that settled in Greenwich, Conn, iCaptain Oliver Ferris was an officer In the Revolutionary War, and served under General Montgomery in the invasion of Canada and took part in the the siege and capture of St. Johns in 1771* at that time he was quarter master of his regiment with the rank of lieutenant and shortly after that received a commission as Captain.In the spring of 1802, Oliver Ferris removed from Greenwich to Westchester County, and bought the farm of Major Jacob Van Tassel on the Hudson River between Irvington and Tarry* town, known as Woirert’s Roost” and which at a later period became the borne of Washington Irving. The date of transfer was on March 31st 1802.Captain Oliver Ferris died on August 17th 1820 and his son Benson Ferris, Sr; in 1835 sold the homestead comprising ten acres, to Wasington Irving,
