July 24. 1918. IHe was. early cited for braveryand one of the precious treasurespossessed by his family is the citation. a copy of which follows:“The Yankee Division.“Pvt. Chas. W. Cottingham. San.Det. 101st Infantry:“I have read with much pleasure i the reports of your regimental commander and brigade commander re garding your gallant conduct and devotion to duty in the field on July 24. aiding your wounded com- j rades under heavy enemy fire— j i Foret-de-Fere—Second Battle of the , Marne—and have ordered your name and deeds to be entered in I ithe records of the Yankee Division.C. P. EDWARDS.Major General Commanding.I Twenty-Sixth Division !On the back of the document is i an endorsement as follows:“General Edwards directs that I tender yon his deep sympathy in I the loss of your brother, a brave soldier who gave his life for his I country.C. A. STEVENS.I Lieut. Colonel Division Adjutant.”The writer knew Charlie well. He . possessed a sturdy honesty and was ever ready to assume and perform | all tasks with energy and ability. He was faithful to his friends— a worthy, honorable young man. But j few young men have left a deeper impress on the history of the East Central State Normal than CharlesW\ Colttngham.
