July 31. (ANP) An appeal was made to Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson to save the last remaining Negro school for civilian pilot training located at Chicago. The request for assurance that the school would not he closed was sent by U. S. Rep. Raymond S. McKeough (Dem., Chicago).The congressman also asked that the war secretary express favorable remarks on the proposition that every facility be extended to young Negroes to assure them an equal opportunity to continue their air training. Alexander racial discrimination at the government depot at the State Fair Grounds was denied by Col. F. D. Lynch of the Army Air Forces. The ministers told the officer that benches at or near the employment office were marked “Colored Men” and “Colored Women.”Col. Lynch said that the benches in use were old ones from the parks and that some were marked colored.“It is my belief that the juxtaposition was accidental since the arrangement was not the one intended by this Headquarters and is not the arrangement which I observed today (July 24). To avoid any possibility of accidental offense being given any American citizen, I have given instruction that the designations lie painted out.” Col.
