SOLDIERS ON LONG MARCH, lt;• , .• . «Two Batteries from Fort Sherdiera « *With Twelve Guns Arrive HereBound for J Comp Douglis cm Practice Marcli—Rested Half nn Hour—- Attract AMention,' Teople residing two miles' south of the city were astonished this morning• when thejr saw 250 horsemen approach* ing, attired in uniforms and dragging twelve or fourteen guns, They imagined all kinds of things and wondered if a war had been declared and they hadjmt heard of it. The strangers were two batteries of artillery which left Fort , Sheridan.on Monday morning-on a practice inarch for Gamp Douglas, Wis., fora six weeks’1 encampment.'Later in the afternoon an advance guard passed through the city and then came the soldiers, 250 strong and all mounted, in charge of Major A. D. Scheneck. Captain L, G. Parry is in charge of the ivinth battery and Captain 8. E. Allen is in charge of the Twenty-iirstwBesides the men mounted there art; twelve guns., and as the large force passed through the various streets, and particularly on the north side there was all kinds of excitement, not. one in ten having any idea who the men were, where they were going or what the object of their-march. Tonight they cxpeet to camp at or near County Line. The distance from Fort Sheridan to Camp Douglas is about 210 miles.A rest of about thirty minutes was taken on Stain street before the march north was resumed. The men said said it was pretty warm on the road, but that travel wits fair. They have blankets and all other baggage necessary. The guns are formidable looking weapons, and many carefully, examined the same.Last night they camped three miles• north of Kenosha. The horses were pretty well tired out pulling the guns.The sight was one seldom witnessed by the.'.quiet people of a city like-Racine. It reminded the old soldiers of the time they trailed along behind the guns in the dark days of 1SG1 to 1805, and of the many bloody conflicts engaged in. It brought out the enthusiasticimd patriotic feelings of the young also. .Hundreds followed the troopers on wheels and in carriages and the kodak fiend wns out taking snap shots of the grand procession, not seen since the. war. i . _ _______ ' ■
