Tuefday laft being the day agreed on for the exchange of prifoners, between twelve and one o’clock Dr.-Warren and Brigadier General Putnam, in a! phaeton, together with Major.Dunbar and Lieutenant Hamilton, of the 64th, on horfeback; Lieut. Potter, of the marines, in a chaife; John Hilton, of the 47th ; Alexander Campbell, of the 4th; John Tyne, Samuel Mafey, Thomas Pany, and Thomas Sharp, of the marines, wounded men, in two coaches; the whole ef-corted by the .Weathersfield * company, under the command of Capr. Chefter, entered the town of Charles-town, and marching flowly through it, halted at the ferry, where, ypon a fignal given. Major Moncrief landed from 1 the Lively, in order to receive the prifoners-and fee his old friend Captain Putnam. Their .meeting was truly cordial and afFeianate : the wonnded privates were foon feat on board the tively, but Major Moncrief and the other officers retarned with General Putman to the houfe of Doctor Fofter, where an entertainment was provided for'them. About three o’clock a fignal was made by the Lively, that they were ready to deliver up our prifoners; upon which Gen. Putnam and Major Moncrief wentto the ferry, white they received the prifoners, who were cpadofted to. the houfe of Doctor Fofter, and there refreihedj after which the General and Major returned to their company, and fpent an hpor or two in a very agreeable manner. Between five and fix o’clock Major Moncrief, with the eScers that had been delivered to him, were conduced with the utmoft decency and good iiamour 5 and the Weathersfield company did ionoor to thcmfelves, their officers, and their country.
