PHOTO: VFW seeks membersFrom C1somebody old enough to remember (these men), but I can't say that there are many guys born in ’22 that talked to somebody who fought in World War I,” said Omar Goodwin, adjutant of the post. “But there might be 5 percent still alive that might remember this.The first VFW post was located at Ninth and B streets in Marysville and was then moved to 14th Street.When the post was on 14th Street, Goodwin said, it was a popular polling place. It was also a place where people were able to watch wrestling matches from the balconies inside.Goodwin and Carver hope that as more people learn about the post, they will want to getinvolved.“Right now we are trying to get back on our feet, and get all of the veterans organized,” Carver said. “I am 71 and I am the youngest in the post. Let’s face it, we’re dying off and it would be great to get young people into the veterans.”In the future, the post is working on acquiring a building to temporarily house disabled veterans and organize a scholarship competition.Goodwin said they are working to get the post as active as it was in the past, but he is also looking forward to piecing together as much history as he can.“I think that it is interesting history that goes into how active this town was back in the ’20s,” Goodwin said. “I think this is worth all the history we can derive from it.”The Yuba-Sutter area is rich with history.
