NYA BuildingsTo House VetsPlan Will Relieve Housing ShortageClt;do;whelt;o:BwS]asitlThe 25 temporary dwelling units recently approved by the Federal Public Housing Authority for Benton Harbor may be provided by remodeling the existing wooden framebuildings of the former NYA camp located on the property of the twin city airport, according to plans discussed, last evening at the meeting of the city commission in the Municipal building.Since the airport property is jointly owned by the cities of St. Joseph and Benton Harbor, the St. Joseph city commission will have to register its approval of the plan before Benton Harbor can sign final contracts with the housing authority.Benton Harbor City Manager H. H. Crow reported last evening that he expected favorable action from the St. Joseph commission In the near future.Crow said that the Federal Housing Authority had offered the city a five-year contract, which would be subject to year-to-year extension after the five-year period had ex- j aiIV eYpired.The contract might be terminated prior to five years on a piecemeal basis, Crow said, if at any time the temporary units appeared not to be needed.aicUNDER STIPULATIONS OF THE CONTRACT, the federal agency will bear all the expense of providing the 25 units. The city of Benton Harbor will be required to furnish Jhe site for the units and also manage the project as soon as It is ready for occupancy.Any profit from operation of the project, Crow said, will have to be turned over to the federal agency.i\cOn a motion by Commissioner Ray Neary, supported by L. A. Holley, the commission voted to approve signing of the contract presented by the federal agency, subject to the approval of City Attorney Wilbur Cunningham.Under terms of the contract, title in the dwelling units will adhere to the city of Benton Harbor.fIcIIrs
