• Fort SiU rates as one of the top Army bases in the country and has won a flock of awards including overall best appearance last year. Its commander is Mqj. Gen. Raphael Hallada. He has a solid Wisconsin background, having graduated from Seymour High School (near Green Bay) in 1954 and from St. Norbert’s College at De Pere in 1958. He’s a razor-sharp guy with a good sense of humor. His wife, the former Shirley Bana-szynski, complements him well with her radiating personality. She grew up in Pulaski, attended UW-Whitewater for one year before transferring to St. Norbert’s the first year that women were admitted to that college. She also graduated in 1958. The couple has been married 31 years. She is an aunt of Pulitzer Prize newspaper writer Jackie Banaszyn-ski, a former Gazette reporter.General Hallada notes that, “From reveille to taps, from our firing ranges to our commissaries, Fort Sill is truly an installation committed to excellence... A spirit of caring exists in all we do.” He gives you the impression he’s sincere in what he says.
