Friends of the Arts with their sponsored East End Art Fair and Art in the Eyeeyes - as soon as possible - of all who come to Marshall!Veterans' Cornerby Don WeberCingWhat is a service» •* A service officer is someone appointed to help veterans in need. He or she is available to help veterans in many different ways, depending on the veterans' needs.A veteran can go to the nearest VA hospital for health care. -A service officer may help with the application for health care by helping fill out the paperwork or by getting the veteran transportation to the VA hospital. The service officer may also advise the veteran on how to get through the VA system. In most cases, it is better to seek thejadvise of a service officer before going to the VA, just so you know what you are entitled to receive.Veterans who have been denied for claims or compensation for injuries or sickness while serving in the military are now’ being helped because of the good service officer programs. That service was not available until recent years. Now, veterans organizations that have service officer programs are demanding that veterans should be helped and taken care of.You*would not go to court without legal representation. Likewise, the VA system can be a tough place to get through without a service officer.I talked to a veteran a month or so ago that had tried for two years to get help on his own. v1 had talked to his older brother whom I went to school with. He had taken my advice and convinced his brother to file aclaim with a service officer who had done a claim before me, before I had become a service officer. This service officer is one of the best in• •my opinion.I do for veterans what 1 can do. Veterans deserve the best. If 1 can't take care of them the way I would want to be taken care of, 1 have no problem with sending them to someone who can. Some service officers are paid for whatthey do.My job is a volunteer position, 1 get the satisfaction of know 1 helped someone.Service officers can be found at your local veterans organization post or office in almost every town, small or large. Also, in every VA hospital. Some can be found in .county offices. You should never be too far away.Remember, the new' veterans memorial. It's in the planning stage, but work w ill begin soon.Donations are being made and accepted. You might want to consider a contribution to the fund at a veterans' passing, such as a gift in his or her name instead of flowers or some other charity. Just a thought. To make a contribution, contact Cliff Wise, VFW commander, at 781-2234.You can also contact Robert Lake of the American Legion at 317-7487, Terry Ivey of the Vietnam Veterans' of America, 78 1 -4029.Or, call me at 275-9440.Until next time, keep your flag flying high and often.
