Phelps, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Phelps of 45 Circle Drive, Centralia, enlisted on active duty in the United States Air Forceon April 12, 1991.Miss Phelps, a 1985 graduate of Jacksonville High School, will attend Air Force basic training atLackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.According to SSgt. Smith, the local Air Force recruiter, Miss Phelps will earn credits toward an associate degree in applied sciences through the Community College of the Air Force upon completion of basic training and technical training school.HughesSpecialist Benjamin H. Hughes was the recipient of the Army Commendation Medal for his participation in Operation Desert Storm.Specialist Hughes currently serves as a fire direction center specialist in Alpha Battery, Fortieth Field Artillery, which is a multiple launch rocket system battery in the Third Armored Division. Specialist Hughes’ battery was deployed on amovement to contact to engage elite Tawakalna Division of the Iraqi Republic Guard. On 26 February, 1991, his battery came under observed artillery fire as his unit moved deeper into Iraq. Specialist Hugheswas able to reposition his fire direction center track, to avoid casualties, and continued to deliver accurate and timely firing data to the battery’s ten launchers.Specialist Hughes is the MS of Carl R. Hughes and Millie B* Hughes of Jacksonville. His previous awards include the Army Achievement Medal. He has served in Alpha Battery, Fortieth FieldArtillery since December 1988.He is a 1988 graduate of Jacksonville High School.
