Civil Defense Offers Identification Tags,Would Have Great Value In EmergencyrE statewide distribution of the official identification tag to citizens of Indiana was inaugurated at the opening March 31 of the'Alert America Convoy Show at the state fairgrounds in Indianapolis. Frederick T. Cretors, director of the Indiana Department of Civil Defense, presented the first ID tags to Gov. Henry F. Schricker and Mrs.Schricker, and following this presentation tags were issued to all who applied for them. Twenty-five hundred ID tags were issued to visitors at the show and statewide distribution has been conducted since as fast as applications were received. The official Indiana ID tag as approved by the advisory council of the Indiana Department of Civil Defense, is a small stainless steel quadrangle with a stainless steel chain suitable for wearing around the neck. Mr. Cretors stated that “when you can put an ID tag around your neck, civil defense begins to come home to you. You begin to understand that you are worth identifying as the particular person you are, regardless of what happens to you. Without an almost indestructible tag around your neck you may be hard to name.”Mr. Cretors also indicated the value of the IDtag by pointing out further reasons for its use as“lost children need to be united with their parents and separated families brought together after an emergency,“Wounded persons who cannot talk 01* remember, need to be identified.“And thousands of refugees passing through an evacuation area or an emergency care center need to be rapidly entered on the records for ‘location’ purposes later.”The ID tag may be purchased from the Indiana Department of Civil Defense for 25 cents. It will carry the individual's name, address, city and state, birth date, and religion. It will not melt underJ2,500 degrees Fahrenheit, will not tarnish, discolor the skin, get out of shape, or wear out. It is the same tag now being used by all men in the armed forces and is the result of years of experimentation. The ultimate objective of the Indiana Departmentof Civil Defense is an ID tag for every Hoosier citizen.
