Committee to Send Circulars to Soldiers to Contribute Whatever They Can.The Chicago Maine Memorial Fund Association made its first appeal to the Spanish War Veterans of Chicago last night at a meeting of Columbia Camp, No. i'. U. S. W. V. Since its organization Wednesday night the officers of the association, which is composed of representatives of the different patriotic organizations. have been busy planning a campaign to interest every veteran and patriot in the Middle West in the Maine monument. Last night the first gnn was fired.Captain Edward H. White, first vice president of the association, told the assembled veterans of the work they were trying to do.“We want to interest every veteran/' he said. “We feel that every man who reverences the memory of the men who sacrificed their lives for their country in Havana harbor should have an opportunity to contribute to the fund for erecting a monument to them.“We do not want this to be a monument to the memory of these men a3much as we wish to make it a mark ofrespect from the whole people. Knowing that one man may be able to give athousand dollars where another would feel the loss of one dollar more, we are not going to publish the amounts contributed. Every man will be credited with his good will, not the dollars hegives.”The meeting of the veterans was a social oine for the purpose of presenting their past commanders with jewels, following the Grand Army custom, and guests from most of the other Chicago camps were present. Hearty approval of the aims of the association and the democratic means of accomplishing them was accorded Captain White In a long-drawn-out applause as he finished.“I am sorry that we are not holding a business meeting to-night, so that we might indorse the attempts of the Me- j morial Association to accomplish such a i worthy object,” said Commander George ' Heilman lt;yf the veterans’ camp. “We have guests to-night, or I would see that we gave it informal indorsement. I am sure that veterans throughout the country will rally to the support of the association.“There should be a universal response to their call for funds by every man who loves his country, whether he is a veteran in fact or only iu spirit. Members of the camp I talked with before the meeting not only signified their intention of contributing, but declared that a vote of indorsement of the purposes of the association and thanks to Mr. Hearst for his generosity in duplicating their efforts should be passed at the first business meeting.”Letters asking the aid of all veterans will be sent out to-day.
