the Eighth air force, was killed in a plane crash Dec. 31, 1944. at Bartelsdorf, Germany, according to the official report taken from captured German records. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank E. Machen, 1432V2 Third avenue SE,he had been missing in action over Germany since Dec. 31, 1944.On a bombing mission to Hamburg, Sgt. Machen’s plane was “seriously damaged by enemy fighter planes while over the target and the bail-out order was given,” according to the war department message.In addition to the Air Medal with three clusters, which Sgt. Machen had already earned, he has been posthumously awarded another Air Medal with three clusters “for meritorious achievement while participating in heavy bombardment missions in the air offensive against the enemy over continental Europe,” the message said. “The courage, coolness and skill displayed by this enlisted man upon these occasions reflects credit upon himself. . . .”Machek had also won the Purple Heart, a presidential citation and citation of honor by H. H. Arnold, general of the army air forces.A Franklin graduate, Sgt. Machen had attended Coe college two years, when he enlisted in the air force. He reported overseas in July of 1944 and served in territory he had previously visited in trips abroad, in 1936 and 1937, when he went to England and the continent with his parents and his brother, James, now released from the coast guard.
