She was thefirst American woman to land on Iwo Jima and now she has addedOkinawa to her list.She stepped from a Navy air transport evacuation plane onto Okinawa six days after the American invasion.“Everything was pretty quiet,” she said, ‘‘although there was firing in the back hills. The tremendous invasion fleet was spread out all over the sea, but there was no firing.”“We landed after about an eight-hour flight from Guam and took time only to unload mail, medicine and supplies, then loaded 20 wounded and took off. There was no air activity.“T h e wounded included 16 stretcher cases. They were all Army except one Marine. They joked and kidded although some of them were in serious condition.”Ens.
