In 1942. on five days notice, heestablished the Army Air ForceOfficer Candidate School at Miami Beach, Fla., forerunner ofthe OCS at Lakeland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Tex., vhichtoday trains more than 4,000 officers a year.Under his direction the first Air Force Fighter Gunnery Match took place at Nellis Air ForceBase, Las Vegas. Nev., in 1949, Today. the annual event draws thetop-notch pilots from Air Force units stationed throughout the world.KNOWS ROUTESRemaining familiar with the routes and the conditions underwhich his men must operate flying scheduled operations throughout the globe. Gen. StoweU. during his five years at Continental Division, has flown an average of 109,000 miles a year.He also is rated as pilot in both the French and Chinese National Air Forces and has among his Service Cross, Air Medal, *Lcgionof Merit, Grand Officer in Shcfer-ian Empire (French, 1945), Order of the Nichan Tetikhar Tunisia), Commandant Legion of Honor (French), and Order of the Star of Africa (Liberia). Gen. Stowcll also holds the honorary rank ofprivate first class In the French Foreign Legion.
