MaJ. Gen. James S. Stowell, Phoenix native and Central HighSchool graduate, who is recognized as one of the most experienced men in military air transportation , will retire May 31 from the U. S. Air Force,Gen. Stowell, who played key roles in two of the largest airlifts in history, has commanded Continental Division, Military Air Transport Service, USAF, with headquarters at Kelly Air ForceBase, Tex., the past five years.The much - decorated military man, stepson of Mrs. Attic Page Stowell of PHbcnix, began his service career in 1924 when hewas graduated from the U. S.jMilitary Academy at West Point.A seasoned veteran of air transportation, training and administration, he has directed the growthof Continental Division from adomestic operation into a worldwide transport training, ferrying and air evacuation operation.COMMANDED DEPOT In 1948. during the Berlin Airlift, he commanded the world's largest air depot, the San Antonio Air Materiel Area, which was the sole supplier of aircraft engines to the transport aircraftflying the airlift,During his command of 'Continental Division, he directed participation in the Pacific airlift,flying high priority cargo and personnel Into Japan for further deployment into Korea and the return of the wounded allied military personnel.Con. Stowell's air transportcommand experience dates back to June, 1043. when he became executive officer of the Africa Middle Fast Wing of the Army Air Transport Command, forerunner of MATS,He later became commander of the Central African Sector which took in the larger portion of ailtransport and ferrying dementsin Central Africa, the Middle Eastand Saudi Arabia.Gen. Stowell also commanded the Central African Wing, then a vital link in the pipeline ofsupplies from the U. S. to troopsthroughout the world, the North African Division, with 13,000 men under his command and the North Atlantic Division. taking inseveral Atlantic Coast bases, inaddition to those in Labrador, Newfoundland, Greenland, Iceland, Azores and Bermuda.Although the larger part of his military service has been in the air transportation field, Gen.
