SON OF LORNE ERWZN SURVIVOR \ OF HMCS TRENTON1ANBRA Jimmy Erwin, son of Mr. and , Mrs Lome Erwin. Toronto, and nephew of Edward. Fred and Robert Erwin of Georgetown :s a survivor of the torpedoed cprvettc. HMCS Trentonlan. and is on survivo:*£ leave at Ids home .liV Toronto.The attack occurred in the afternoon. about 1.20. according to Jimmy. He was on duly af a depth-charge thrower on the poriside when the torpedo hit. There was a loud explosion. Thcr. the bridge ordered them to boat stations. By th*' time the ship was sinking by the item. There was no panic of any jort. They walked to their boats and carlcy floats and then awaited further orders. Wh^n the bridge ordered Abandon Ship' be jpmied over the side with several other chaps. They, never got the float away, it ail happened so suddenly. He and several other survivors floated aoout in the water for 40 minutes until picked up by Royal Navy motor launches. Luckily the water was smooth, and the weather fine. _In ERA Erwin’s opinion, it was the life-jackets that saved the day. Each man was wearing one when the incident occurred and. consequently, no lives were lost through drowning.
